A thick blanket of fog led to a chaotic six-vehicle pileup on the Rangpur-Dhaka highway early Saturday morning, leaving at least 15 people injured.
The crash, which involved buses, trucks, and vans, occurred around 7:30 a.m. at Gorer Matha Mor in Mithapukur, Rangpur.
Local sources and highway police reported that several vehicles traveling from Dhaka lost control due to the dense fog.
The result was a multi-vehicle collision at the busy four-way intersection in Mithapukur, involving two buses, a truck, a pickup van, and a covered van.
The impact shattered the windshields of several vehicles, causing injuries to passengers and drivers. Some of the injured were quickly taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Md. Moniruzzaman, the Officer-in-Charge of Barodorga Highway Police, confirmed the incident.
"The highway traffic is now back to normal, and the damaged vehicles have been cleared. Fortunately, it wasn’t a major accident," he said.
He further mentioned that the thick fog is causing a series of small accidents along the Rangpur Highway region.
"In many areas, visibility has dropped significantly. We’re advising drivers and passengers to travel cautiously and keep their headlights on."
Just a day earlier, five separate accidents on the Rangpur-Dhaka highway in Pirganj and other areas of the district claimed the lives of seven people.
Drivers are being urged to stay alert and avoid speeding during these foggy conditions to prevent further accidents.
