In a surprising turn of events, Lieutenant General (Retd.) Moinul Islam, the former Director General of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), was arrested by immigration police on December 24 at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
He was reportedly about to board a flight to Canada with his wife.
Moinul Islam, who became the Director General of BGB in the wake of the tragic 2009 BDR mutiny, is remembered for overseeing major changes in the force.
The mutiny, which took place on February 25, 2009, led to the deaths of 74 people, including 57 army officers, at BDR’s Pilkhana headquarters. Just 48 hours after the deadly incident, Moinul Islam was appointed to lead the BGB.
Under his leadership, the BGB went through significant reforms. One of the most notable changes was the redesign of the force’s uniform, along with the creation of a new intelligence unit within the border guard.
Moinul Islam’s efforts didn’t go unnoticed, and he was later promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General, eventually serving as General Staff at Army Headquarters.
In 2015, Moinul Islam took on the role of Principal Staff Officer for the Armed Forces Division. After serving with distinction, he retired from the army in February 2016.
Before becoming the head of BGB, Moinul Islam was also a key figure at the National Defence College of Bangladesh, where he served as the chief instructor for the Armed Forces War Course.
As the investigation continues, his sudden arrest at the airport has raised many questions.
