A Dhaka court has ordered a two-day remand for Nishi, the former Joint General Secretary of the banned Chhatra League, in connection with a case involving an attack on Dhaka University students.
The incident is linked to a serious charge of attempted murder, filed at Shahbagh police station.
The court`s decision came on Tuesday afternoon, after hearing from both the defense and the prosecution.
The remand request was presented by the Detective Branch (DB) police, who asked for a ten-day remand.
However, the court granted only two days.
During the hearing, Nishi`s defense lawyer, M. Noman Hossain Talukdar, argued that Nishi had resigned from her position in Chhatra League back in 2022. Since then, she had no involvement in politics.
“She was arrested two days ago in Satkhira, and she has been in police custody for the last 36 hours,” Talukdar said.
“As a female defendant, she could have been taken to Satkhira Court, but instead, she was brought to Dhaka after 36 hours. At this point, there’s no need for further questioning. She could have been questioned at the jail gate if needed."
In contrast, prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruqi presented the case for the remand, stating, “This defendant was responsible for ordering the attack on the students. The students were severely injured because of her actions. We saw her in the CCTV footage of the incident. If she is remanded, we will be able to find out who else was involved in this attack. I am requesting a ten-day remand.”
After considering both sides, the court granted a two-day remand.
Nishi was arrested by police in Satkhira on January 12 and later shown as arrested in this case.
The case accuses Chhatra League, Youth League, and Awami League activists of attacking Dhaka University students on July 15 during the anti-discrimination movement.
Over 300 students were injured in the attack.
Arman Hossain, a student from Sergeant Zahirul Haque Hall at the university, filed the case for attempted murder at Shahbagh police station on October 28.
Chhatra League president Saddam Hossain is the main accused, and Nishi is listed as the 210th accused in the case.
