Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Sunday said the government has stepped up efforts to stabilise the law-and-order situation in Khagrachhari, following days of unrest triggered by the alleged gang rape of a schoolgirl.

Speaking to journalists after a core committee meeting, Chowdhury said Parbatya Chattogram Affairs Adviser Supradeep Chakma sat with local officials at 10 am on Sunday to discuss measures for restoring order in the hill district.

“The incident in Khagrachhari caused the situation to spiral somewhat out of control, but steps are now being taken to bring it back under control,” he said, adding that the government was closely monitoring media reports on the latest developments there.

Turning to preparations for the upcoming Durga Puja festival, the Home Affairs Adviser said 203,564 members of Ansar have been deployed nationwide, along with 70,000 police personnel, 100,000 members of the armed forces and 430 platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) to ensure security.
