Govt issues gazette banning all Awami League activities

The Awami League has faced accusations of undermining democratic institutions, suppressing dissent, and manipulating electoral processes.

The government has issued a gazette notification banning all activities of the Awami League and its affiliated bodies until the ongoing trials of its leaders and activists at the International Crimes Tribunal are concluded.

The notification was issued on Monday (May 12) by the Public Security Division under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

According to the notification, the ban applies to all organizational activities, including publications, media appearances, online and social media campaigns, rallies, meetings, and conferences involving the Awami League, its associate organizations, and like-minded platforms.

This development follows months of political upheaval and a mass uprising in July last year that demanded justice for alleged war crimes and human rights abuses committed by political figures in recent decades.

The Awami League, which had been in power for 15 consecutive years, has faced accusations of undermining democratic institutions, suppressing dissent, and manipulating electoral processes.

The interim government, formed after the July uprising, pledged to ensure accountability and transitional justice.

As part of this process, investigations and prosecutions have been initiated against several political figures, including top leaders of the Awami League, for alleged involvement in crimes committed during and after the 1971 Liberation War.

The tribunal, originally set up to try 1971 war criminals, has recently expanded its scope to include more recent allegations of grave abuses of power, drawing both national and international attention.

Officials say the ban is temporary and will remain in effect until the tribunal completes its proceedings against Awami League members.
