Salahuddin Ahmed on Thursday said the government has decided to gradually withdraw the army from field-level law enforcement duties as the country’s law and order situation has improved.

Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat, the minister said the police force has regained discipline and public confidence has increased.

He said the army cannot remain deployed indefinitely after an elected government has taken office.

According to the minister, the withdrawal process will be carried out in phases through coordination among the police, army and other agencies.

Ahmed also said operations against extortionists, drug traders, armed criminals and illegal gambling networks are continuing across the country.

He said law enforcement agencies are conducting drives based on prepared lists and warned that no one is above the law.

The minister added that both joint and separate operations by different agencies are ongoing in various areas.

He claimed that the improvement in law and order is now visible, although some people may have different opinions.
