Govt to expand all upazila health complexes to 101-bed facilities

The government has launched a nationwide initiative to increase the capacity of all upazila health complexes to 101 beds in a move aimed at improving healthcare services at the grassroots level and easing pressure on higher-level hospitals.

As part of the process, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has instructed health facilities across the country to assist inspection teams that will assess infrastructure and expansion requirements before the upgrade work begins.

According to a DGHS order issued on June 3, the programme has been undertaken following a directive from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and with approval from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Health officials said many upazila health complexes currently operate with limited bed capacity, making it difficult to accommodate growing numbers of patients. Expanding the facilities is expected to improve access to inpatient treatment and reduce the need for referrals to district hospitals.

Under the plan, inspection teams made up of representatives from the Public Works Department and other relevant government agencies will visit health complexes nationwide.

The teams will examine existing buildings, available space, renovation needs and the feasibility of accommodating additional beds.

Upazila Health and Family Planning Officers have been directed to provide necessary documents, information and administrative support to ensure the inspections are completed smoothly.

Officials believe the expansion will significantly strengthen healthcare delivery at the local level.

The upgraded facilities are expected to improve services in maternal and child healthcare, emergency treatment, medicine, surgery and other key medical areas.

The initiative is also expected to make healthcare more accessible by allowing more patients to receive treatment closer to home, reducing the burden on district and divisional hospitals.
