Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the 'India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline' tomorrow (Saturday) around 5pm through video conference.
The first cross-border fuel oil pipeline between the two countries has the capacity to transport 1 million tonnes of high-speed diesel (HSD) per annum and will initially supply diesel to 7 northern districts of Bangladesh, according to Indian PMO, reads media reports.
A deal was signed in 2017 to import diesel from India to Bangladesh through a pipeline stretching from Siliguri in West Bengal to Meghna Petroleum Depot in Parbatipur in Dinajpur.
Of the Rs 377 crore pipeline, the Bangladesh section has been built at a cost of around Rs 285 crore with the help of Indian grants.
The pipeline extends for 125 kilometres in the territory of Bangladesh and 5 kilometres inside India.
