The government is considering setting up a circuit bench of the High Court Division in Chattogram, said Law Minister Anisul Huq while replying to a question from Awami League lawmaker Mamunur Rashid Kiron (Noakhali-3) in the House on Thursday.
As per the Article 100 of the Constitution, the permanent seat of the Supreme Court shall be in the capital, but sessions of the High Court Division may be held at such other place or places as the Chief Justice may, with the approval of the President, from time to time appoint, he added.
"With the authority given in the Article, the matter of setting up a circuit bench of the High Court Division in Chittagong is under active consideration," he was quoted as saying by an English daily.
On September 2, Information and Broadcasting Minister Hasan Mahmud has said the demand for the formation of a High Court Circuit Bench in Chattogram will be fulfilled within the next two months.
At that time, Hasan said that the law minister assured him to set up a Circuit Bench in Chattogram within the next couple of months to meet the long-cherished demand of its lawyers.
