In a bold move, the National Independent Investigation Commission has announced plans to question Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in India if the Indian government does not return her to Bangladesh.
This announcement was made by the commission’s president, Major General A.L.M. Fazlur Rahman, during an event held at the RAOWA Club in Dhaka on Monday, January 6.
The event was focused on discussions with the families of the martyrs from the infamous BDR massacre. Major General Fazlur Rahman addressed the crowd by stressing that simply accusing foreign and local figures of being involved in the tragedy wouldn’t be enough.
“It’s not enough to just say that India was involved; we need to present solid evidence to support this claim,” he emphasized.
He made it clear that every piece of evidence, whether big or small, would be carefully examined.
Regarding Sheikh Hasina’s possible return to Bangladesh, the commission`s president stated that if India refuses to send her back, they will seek permission from the Indian authorities to question her there.
He also mentioned that despite any challenges, like not having additional security or transport, the commission will push forward with their work.
Major General Fazlur Rahman assured the public that the commission would conduct an impartial investigation into the BDR massacre, working with all relevant parties.
He acknowledged that much crucial evidence had been destroyed over the past 16 years but emphasized that the commission was committed to carrying out a thorough and transparent investigation from this point onward.
The commission aims to finish the investigation within three months, although Major General Fazlur Rahman noted that if necessary, they would request an extension to ensure complete justice for those affected by the massacre.
"We want everyone involved to receive justice," he concluded.
