BNP sees inconsistencies in final draft of July Charter: Salahuddin

Salahuddin Ahmad, a member of the BNP Standing Committee, has said that the party has identified certain inconsistencies in the final draft of the July Accord. He added that the party will soon share its official feedback on the matter.

Speaking to the media on Sunday, Salahuddin said, “We received the draft last Saturday. We will submit our opinion within the specified time. At present, it appears that some issues are inconsistent and certain points have not been accurately presented.”

Another BNP Standing Committee member, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, said that the party had set aside differences for the sake of unity and extended cooperation in the July Accord. He added that it is now the government’s responsibility to implement the agreement.

Tuku further noted that to give the accord constitutional status, it must go through Parliament. However, he criticized those raising various demands about the implementation process, saying they are inadvertently supporting a failing government.

Last Saturday (16 August), the National Unity Commission sent the long-awaited draft of the July Accord to political parties. The draft proposes measures to ensure constitutional and legal validity and includes 84 points agreed upon in political consensus and eight implementation pledges, though the process for execution is not clearly outlined.

The commission’s tenure has been extended by one month until 15 September, and further meetings with political parties are planned to finalize the accord and discuss its implementation.
