5 more Awami League leaders, activists arrested in Dhaka

In Dhaka, police have arrested five more leaders and activists of the banned Awami League and its affiliated organizations during separate operations carried out over the past 24 hours.

The arrests were confirmed in a statement issued on Sunday by the Public Relations and Media wing of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, signed by Deputy Commissioner Talebur Rahman.

Among those detained are Dhaka North Trinomool Sramik League’s organizing secretary Md. Monir Hossain, Naogaon’s Patnitala upazila Dibor Union Chhatra League general secretary Saeed Saddam Shakil, Kishoreganj’s Pakundia upazila Chhatra League former joint convener Iqbal Ahmed Ripon, Cumilla’s Debidwar thana Awami League cultural secretary Md. Salauddin Mamun, and Fakir Md. Maruf Reza, chairman of Jalalabad Union Awami League in Gopalganj Sadar.

Police said Monir Hossain was arrested on Sunday morning from the Demra area by a Cyber South Division team.

On Saturday afternoon, Saddam Shakil was picked up from near the KIB Convention Hall in Farmgate, while later that night Iqbal Ripon was taken into custody in Uttara.

The same day, Salauddin Mamun was detained from Demra, and Maruf Reza was arrested in Paltan, both by separate teams of the Ramna Division.

Detective Branch officials added that legal proceedings against all five detainees are now in progress.
