Rickshaw puller arrested at Dhanmondi 32 granted bail

A rickshaw puller, Mohammad Azizur Rahman, who was arrested from the Dhanmondi 32 area in Dhaka, has been granted bail in an attempted murder case.

The order was issued on Monday when he was presented before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate M. A. Azharul Islam.

Earlier on the same day, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) clarified that Azizur Rahman has not been formally charged in a murder case.

According to the police, he was sent to court as a suspect and subsequently taken into custody.

Azizur Rahman was reportedly assaulted on 15 August while visiting the residence of Bangladesh’s founding father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, at Dhanmondi 32 to offer flowers.

Following the incident, police arrested him. Initially, the court had rejected his bail application, resulting in his temporary detention.

Some media outlets have also reported that Azizur Rahman’s arrest is linked to a separate 2024 attempted murder case filed in Science Lab area during anti-government protests. However, the DMP has stated that this is not related.

The case filed at Dhanmondi Police Station in April sparked widespread discussion on social media.
