At Shahbagh in Dhaka, protesters injured during the July Uprising have taken to the streets once again, demanding proper rehabilitation and compensation.
The protest began around 11 a.m. when a group of 30-40 individuals gathered and, by 2 p.m., had blocked the Banglamotor-bound lane at Shahbagh, halting traffic in that direction.
According to Shahbagh Police Station`s Officer-in-Charge, Khaled Monsur, the protesters have gathered with a series of demands outside the BSMMU.
While traffic was disrupted on the blocked lane, vehicles continued to flow on the other lanes at the intersection.
The protesters are asking for a range of measures, starting with a monthly allowance of 20,000 Taka for those who have permanently lost their ability to work due to their injuries.
They are also demanding one-time payments and the provision of training and employment opportunities in government or semi-government sectors for the main earners in the injured individuals` families.
For those who have recovered and are able to return to work, the protesters are requesting a monthly allowance of 15,000 Taka, as well as a one-time payment and job opportunities in the public sector.
Furthermore, the protesters are calling for the creation of a special protection law aimed at safeguarding the injured and families of martyrs from any future threats, harassment, or assassination attempts.
The law would ensure the harshest penalties for those who target these individuals.
In addition to these demands, they are also asking for mental health support for both the injured and the martyrs` families.
A toll-free hotline to address concerns, prevent harassment, and help resolve issues is also among their requests.
As the protest continues, the injured and their families are determined to be heard, seeking justice and the support they believe they deserve for their sacrifices.
