ISPR denounces misrepresentation of army chief’s statement as deliberate misinformation

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) of Bangladesh has issued a statement condemning the distortion of the Army Chief’s remarks on social media, calling it a deliberate attempt to spread misleading information.

In the statement released on Monday, the ISPR said that recently, a segment of social media users circulated distorted versions of the Army Chief’s speech, which misrepresented the context and content of his remarks. The ISPR described these actions as “purposeful propaganda.”

The statement clarified that on September 30, 2025, a presentation was held during a study period aimed at exploring ways to enhance the effectiveness of army operations in support of civilian administration. The discussion focused on the deployment of army personnel under the country’s existing legal framework and the challenges faced during field operations. The session highlighted provisions of the Bangladesh Penal Code (CrPC) Sections 127–132 related to “In Aid to Civil Power,” emphasizing professional and lawful execution of duties by deployed personnel.

During the discussion, the topic of indemnity under CrPC 132 for army personnel in the field was raised, and the Army Chief elaborated on its alignment with the International Crimes (Tribunals) Act, 1973 (amended 2024). The ISPR stressed that this discussion did not grant immunity to anyone accused of enforced disappearance, extrajudicial killings, or other crimes against humanity.

The ISPR accused a “malicious group,” particularly individuals abroad, of deliberately misrepresenting the study period content and the Army Chief’s remarks on social media to create a false narrative and sow distrust between the armed forces and the public.

The statement reaffirmed that the Bangladesh Army remains committed to upholding the Constitution, national laws, and its duty to the people with professionalism and discipline. The public was urged to remain cautious of such misleading and false information circulating online.
