The Bangladesh Army has released the names of 578 individuals who sought temporary refuge in military cantonments following the July–August 2024 mass uprising.
According to a statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR), shelter was provided purely on humanitarian grounds to protect lives amid widespread unrest, including attacks, arson, looting, and mob violence that followed the government`s collapse.
The sheltered individuals included 24 political figures, 5 judges, 19 civil officials, 515 police personnel, 12 university staff, and 51 family members. Most left the cantonments within one to two days as the situation improved. Five individuals were handed over to law enforcement based on legal cases.
ISPR emphasized that the decision to provide shelter prioritized life-saving over identity verification due to the sudden and volatile nature of the situation.
The army had previously sent partial information to the Ministry of Home Affairs in August, excluding hundreds of police members. The newly released full list includes all 626 names, including 432 regular police officers and one NSI member.
The army clarified that the sheltering of civilians was temporary and based solely on safety concerns, not political alignment. The statement also addressed what it called “misleading campaigns” by certain vested groups aimed at tarnishing the army’s image, urging the public to stay vigilant against misinformation.
The military reaffirmed its commitment to national sovereignty and its professional duty to support the nation with integrity during crises.
