A brutal murder in Rajshahi has left the city in shock. The teenage son of a sitting judge was hacked to death, and the judge’s wife critically injured, in a violent attack at their rented home in the city’s Dabtola area on Thursday.

The victim, 18-year-old Tausif Rahman Sumon, was a class IX student and the only son of Rajshahi Metropolitan and Sessions Judge Md Abdur Rahman and Tasmin Nahar.

According to Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) Commissioner Mohammad Abu Sufian, a man entered the judge’s residence around noon and attacked the family with a sharp weapon. Tausif died on the spot, while his mother sustained serious injuries.

Tasmin Nahar was later admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) in critical condition, confirmed hospital spokesperson Shankar Kumar Biswas.

Police have detained a suspect named Emon in connection with the incident. Investigators said Judge Abdur Rahman had earlier filed a general diary (GD) against Emon while he was posted in Sylhet, expressing concern over the man’s behaviour. The GD was lodged at Jalalabad Police Station there.

RMP officials said Emon is also receiving treatment at a hospital under police custody.

Judge Abdur Rahman, a native of Jamalpur district, had been living with his family in the Dabtola area due to his official assignment in Rajshahi.

Law enforcement officials are yet to confirm the motive behind the murder, which has sparked grief and outrage within the judiciary and the wider community.
