BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia is going through a critical phase of illness, and it cannot be said that her physical condition has improved, her personal physician Dr AZM Zahid Hossain said early on Sunday.

Speaking to journalists in front of Evercare Hospital in Dhaka at around 12:16am, Dr Zahid said Khaleda Zia has been undergoing treatment at the hospital since November 23.

“After being admitted, her physical condition deteriorated significantly. She was first shifted from a cabin to the CCU and later transferred to the ICU for advanced treatment,” he said. “Given this situation, it cannot be said that her condition has improved. She is passing through a very complex and critical moment.”

Dr Zahid added: “By the grace of Allah, if she can overcome this crisis, then Alhamdulillah, something positive will follow.”

He said BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, Khaleda Zia’s eldest son, has sought prayers from people across the country for his mother’s speedy recovery. Tarique Rahman and his wife, Dr Zubaida Rahman, were present at the hospital during the briefing.

Dr Zahid, also a member of the BNP standing committee, said Tarique Rahman expressed gratitude to the members of the medical board overseeing Khaleda Zia’s treatment.

“The BNP chairperson’s treatment is continuing in line with the recommendations of the medical board, and doctors are ensuring that all procedures are being carried out properly,” he said.

He further said Tarique Rahman urged party leaders and activists not to gather unnecessarily outside the hospital to avoid disrupting medical services.

“He requested everyone to remain cautious so that the treatment of Khaleda Zia and other patients is not hampered, and instructed them not to engage in any activities driven by excessive enthusiasm,” Dr Zahid added.
