In connection with a scuffle that broke out at an Iftar gathering organized by the National Citizens‍‍` Party (NCP) in Sylhet, police have arrested Akhtar Hossain, the Sylhet district branch convener of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

The incident occurred on Saturday evening at a convention hall in Sylhet‍‍`s Arambagh area.

During the event, which saw the attendance of central NCP leaders including the party‍‍`s chief coordinator, Nasiruddin Patwary, a commotion broke out between the party‍‍`s members and some activists of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

The altercation reportedly began when Tasmin Zara, NCP‍‍`s senior joint secretary, was delivering a speech.

A few activists from the Anti-Discrimination Movement started an argument with NCP members, which quickly escalated into a physical confrontation.

Journalists covering the event faced resistance from party members when they attempted to record the scuffle. Some journalists even reported attempts to seize their cameras.

Things took a violent turn after the Iftar when another argument broke out, leading to a full-blown brawl. Mahbubur Rahman Shanto, a participant, was injured during this clash.

Following the incident, Shanto filed a case at Shah Paran Police Station late on Saturday night, naming nine individuals and accusing several unidentified others.

Based on this complaint, police launched a raid early Sunday morning, March 23, and arrested Akhtar Hossain from Ausha village in Sylhet Sadar Upazila.

The arrest was confirmed by Monir Hossain, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shah Paran Police Station.

"Akhtar Hossain was arrested in connection with a case filed over the scuffle and altercation at the NCP Iftar event," said OC Monir Hossain.

The situation has raised concerns about growing tensions between political groups and student movements, with further investigations into the incident currently underway.
