The National Moon Sighting Committee will gather this evening to determine the official start date for the holy month of Ramadan in Bangladesh.
The meeting is set to take place today, Saturday, at 6:00 PM at the Islamic Foundation’s conference room, located at Baitul Mukarram.
Dr. A F M Khalid Hossain, Advisor to the Ministry of Religious Affairs, will chair the meeting.
During the session, moon sighting reports from across the country will be reviewed to make the final decision on when Ramadan will begin.
“If the moon is sighted today, then the first fast of Ramadan will be observed tomorrow, Sunday,” the committee said, urging people to inform them immediately if they witness the moon anywhere in Bangladesh.
In line with the tradition, the committee meets every year on the 29th of Shaban in the Arabic calendar to decide the beginning of Ramadan.
This process ensures the fasting month starts with the sighting of the new moon, as required by Islamic customs.
While Bangladesh waits for confirmation, Ramadan has already started today in countries like Saudi Arabia and others in the Middle East, as the moon was sighted in those regions.
How to Report a Moon Sighting
The Islamic Foundation has requested that if the moon is seen anywhere in Bangladesh, the sighting should be reported to the authorities.
People can call or fax their reports to the committee or inform the local Deputy Commissioner or Upazila Executive Officer.
The phone numbers for reporting moon sightings are: 02-223381725, 02-41050912, 02-41050916, and 02-41050917. Alternatively, fax reports can be sent to 02-223383397 or 02-9555951.
By ensuring all necessary steps are taken, the committee is working to guarantee a smooth beginning to this sacred month of reflection and fasting.
