More than one thousand shanties were burnt in a devastating fire that broke out at a Rohingya camp in Ukhiya of Cox's Bazar, officials said.
Eight teams of Fire Service in collaboration with APBN Officers Force brought the fire under control aournd 7pm, two hours after the fire originated at Shafiullah Kata Camp No-16 this evening.
At least 1200 shanties have been gutted. Initially, the fire was believed to have started from a gas stove in the B-block of the camp, said Kamran Hossain, additional superintendent of police at the Armed Police Battalion-8.
Later, the fire spread to B and C blocks of the camp.
On information, Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner Shah Rezwan Hayat, Ukhiya Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nizam Uddin along with other admin officials visited the spot.
Earlier on 2 January, fire broke out at a UN run hospital in Balukhali Camp no-20. Although no casualties were reported in the fire, 16 cabins of the hospital were burnt.
