The shutdown program at the National Board of Revenue (NBR) has entered its second consecutive day, with customs and tax offices across the country participating.
Following a full-day shutdown on Saturday, Sunday also saw continued demonstrations in Dhaka and other regions.
By 10:30 AM Sunday, the presence of protesting officials at the Revenue Bhaban in Agargaon appeared lighter than the previous day.
Entry restrictions at the main gate were somewhat relaxed, with officials allowed to enter upon showing identification.
Security remained tight, though with a reduced presence of personnel from the police, RAB, Coast Guard, BGB, and Ansar compared to Saturday.
Unlike the previous day, some officials were seen gathered under the banyan tree inside the NBR compound.
A police officer stationed at the scene stated that entry was being permitted until 10 AM. “Their official workday starts at 9 AM, and some are still arriving. We`re checking IDs before allowing entry,” he said.
Protesting NBR officials stated that more participants were expected to join as the day progressed, including those from outlying customs and tax offices.
On Saturday, a symbolic "March to NBR" took place across the country, including from key installations like Chattogram Port, Benapole Port, and Dhaka Custom House, effectively halting operations and revenue collection at all major customs and tax stations.
The NBR Reform Unity Council, which is leading the protest, announced that the shutdown and march programs would continue on Sunday as well.
While the protesters have expressed willingness to engage in dialogue with the government, they have set a precondition: the removal of the current NBR chairman.
They allege that the chairman has been disregarding the input of NBR officers and staff in the ongoing revenue sector reforms.
Furthermore, the protesters claim that attempts are being made to suppress and intimidate those participating in the movement.
