NBR employees threaten complete shutdown, demand chairman’s removal

Employees of the National Board of Revenue (NBR), under the banner of the NBR Reform Unity Council, have threatened a complete shutdown of tax, customs, and VAT offices across the country starting Saturday if NBR Chairman Md. Abdur Rahman is not removed.

At a press conference in Dhaka on Monday, the protesters accused the chairman of destabilizing the revenue system and misusing power.

They warned that continuous sit-ins, pen-down strikes, and office boycotts would follow if recent transfer orders against protesting officials were not canceled immediately.

The protest intensified after five tax officers were suddenly transferred, which the council called retaliatory.

Protesters announced phased programs, including work stoppages on June 25 and 26, leading to a full shutdown from June 28 if demands are unmet.

The employees allege that the chairman is violating transfer policies, suppressing peaceful protests, and creating an unhealthy work environment that could harm revenue collection.

Earlier, NBR officials protested the government‍‍`s plan to split the organization, which was later put on hold after their movement.

Despite the chairman’s return to office under heavy security, the conflict between him and the employees remains unresolved.
