Bazlur Rahman alias Bazlu, a member of local union parishad in Narayanganj's Rupganj, has died at the intensive care unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Friday evening.
He was arrested by Rab in a drug and arms case on November 18 last year and under undergoing treatment under the custody of Dhaka Central Jail.
The same night, Rab filed three cases against him on charges of possessing arms, drugs and counterfeit money. There were at least 23 cases against him, including those over murder and drugs.
"Bazlur Rahman was undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital under the supervision of Dhaka Central Jail for about a week," a DMCH police outpost source said.
Bazlur Rahman was a member of ward 9 of Kayetpara Union Parishad of Rupganj upazila and a member of upazila Awami League.
He was accused of controlling the drug trade at the Chonpara Rehabilitation Centre in Rupganj. Locally, he was better known as Bazlu Member.
Bazlur Rahman came into the limelight last year when the drugs issue of Chonpara Rehabilitation Centre was raised in connection with the death of Buet student Fardeen Noor Parash.
