Some parts of the capital has come to a standstill as students from seven colleges affiliated with Dhaka University have blocked Nilkhet and Science Lab intersections from Wednesday morning. This demonstration is part of their ongoing protest against the postponement of their examinations.
The blockade has caused immense suffering to the commuters as the roads are congested with traffic.
The traffic condition has spread to other parts of the city as well. Vehicles could be seen stuck on the Mirpur Road; from Khamarbari intersection to Kawran Bazar and beyond.
A spokesperson from the DMP control room said, “Some parts of Dhaka are witnessing more than average traffic due to the ongoing demonstration at Nilkhet. Our senior officers are there to control the situation but we cannot assure when the situation will get back to normal.”
People were seen getting off from public transports and started walking instead.
A Shadhin Paribahan bus driver, stuck at the Manik Mia Avenue intersection said, “Traffic jams are highly unlikely at this time of the day. My bus hasn’t moved an inch in the past half an hour. Passengers are getting off .”
Earlier on Tuesday Dhaka University authorities at a meeting with principals of the seven colleges decided to postpone all the exams till May 1st, citing the Covid-19 pandemic. After that seven colleges affiliated with Dhaka University started protesting which caused the heavy traffic jam throughout the city.
