In an effort to ease the pressure of rising food prices, the Dhaka District Administration has announced the launch of the ‘People’s Market’ in six different parts of the capital.

This initiative aims to help people by offering essential food items at fair prices.

The first markets will be set up in Kamrangirchar, Mohammadpur, Gulshan, Mirpur, Badda, and Demra, and there are plans to expand to more areas in the future.

Special benefits will also be offered to consumers during the upcoming Ramadan.

The announcement was made by Dhaka District Commissioner Tanveer Ahmed during a meeting held on Saturday at Kudargat Medical Corner in Kamrangirchar.

Local community members have welcomed this new initiative, especially as it will provide much-needed help to lower-income families.

However, they’ve also pointed out the importance of ensuring a steady supply of products, maintaining the safety of the markets, and having enough goods available for shoppers.

Dhaka District Commissioner Tanveer Ahmed explained that one of the common complaints from shoppers has been the high number of middlemen involved in the process of getting products from farmers to consumers.

This usually leads to a rise in prices. He believes that this new market will help reduce the role of these middlemen and bring farmers and consumers closer together.

Tanveer Ahmed added that the goal of these markets is to ensure the fair pricing of food items.

The market will be supported by the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Commerce, and the Directorate of Consumer Rights Protection.

The market will be run in a sustainable way and play an important role in meeting the everyday needs of people in Dhaka.

At the People’s Market, you can expect to find essential items such as fish, meat, milk, eggs, and vegetables, all sold at affordable prices.

Although the market will initially be set up in six locations, there are plans to expand in the future.

The market will be managed by developing infrastructure on government land, and local entrepreneurs, students, and unemployed youth will be involved.

The market will only sell items for retail and a set price list will be used for purchasing.

Shoppers will make digital payments and will receive a code to collect their items.

The meeting was attended by several notable figures, including Deputy Director of the Local Government Ministry Md. Iqbal Hossain, Additional District Commissioner Md. Shamim Hossain (Development & Human Resource Management), Senior Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate Tanzil Parvez, Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate of Lalbagh Zone Shariful Islam, Amirul Islam, Acting Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Keraniganj Police Station, representatives from the Food Department, representatives from the Agricultural Marketing Department, student representatives, and local community members.
