National election in February, interim to step down afterwards: Asif Nazrul

The next national election will be held in February next year, after which the interim government will step down, Law Adviser Dr. Asif Nazrul said on Tuesday (August 19).

Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat, Dr. Nazrul said, “It is the government’s responsibility, not the political parties’, to hold the election. The government is firmly committed to holding it. Every step we take is with the February election in mind. By February, we will leave.”

He noted that political parties often make different statements for their own purposes, which he described as part of the political process.

“In Bangladesh, the nature of political discourse has not changed much. So whatever is said during the election season should be seen as part of that process,” he added.

Regarding the government’s stance, Dr. Nazrul stressed: “We are determined. Our Chief Adviser is a universally respected figure on the global stage. He has made the announcement himself, and there is no question of stepping back from it.”
