Biman announces immediate and long-term measures

Biman Bangladesh Airlines has announced a set of “immediate and long-term” measures after at least eight incidents of technical glitches were reported on its flights within the past month.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, the national flag carrier said, “Biman prioritizes passenger safety and service quality above all else and is ensuring thorough investigation and accountability for each incident.”

Several of the recent malfunctions involved Boeing aircraft in Biman’s fleet. In response, the airline said it has already ordered an investigation into the toilet flush malfunction on a Dhaka–Abu Dhabi flight.

Additionally, a four-member high-powered committee has been formed to review all technical issues reported between July 1 and August 13.

The committee will examine maintenance records and operational processes for each incident, determine root causes, and identify any negligence by officials or staff. It has been tasked with submitting its report within 10 working days, including recommendations to prevent recurrence of such problems.

As part of ensuring accountability, Biman has already reshuffled its staff. Two officials have been transferred, with further changes planned. One engineering official has been transferred as a disciplinary measure, while another in Chattogram has been served with a show-cause notice.

To enhance technical capability, Biman has arranged for additional spare tires to be stocked at major outstations, including Jeddah, Dubai, Madinah, Dammam, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah, to allow quick replacement when necessary. Purchase orders for the required spares have already been placed.

The airline has also directed the director of flight operations to investigate the tire-burst incident in Jeddah. Oversight responsibilities of the directors of engineering and material management, along with chief engineers, have been strengthened.

From August 18, Biman has introduced a special night maintenance shift to provide round-the-clock supervision. The airline’s inventory management system is also undergoing a full review, with Boeing engaged in revising the Component Services Program (CSP) list.

The Recommended Spare Parts List (RSPL) is being reassessed, and Tailored Part Packages (TPP) are under review to ensure procurement is based on actual usage data.

Alongside these measures, Biman has started recurrent training programs for its engineers and launched a recruitment process for new apprentice mechanics. The airline said these initiatives aim to strengthen its technical workforce and enhance long-term operational capability.
