A case has been filed against 100 to 150 unidentified individuals in connection with the looting and theft of stones from the Jaflong quarry in Sylhet’s Gowainghat upazila.
The case was filed late Monday (August 18) by Abdul Munayem, an official at the union land office.
Confirming the matter, Gowainghat Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sarkar Md. Tofayel Ahmed said that according to the case statement, a group of miscreants illegally extracted 40,000 to 50,000 cubic feet of stones from the government-listed Jaflong quarry at Zero Point over three consecutive days—August 7, 8, and 9. The looted stones are estimated to be worth around Tk 6 million.
OC Tofayel Ahmed added that those involved in the stone looting will be identified through investigation and brought under the law.
He also noted that cases had previously been filed against individuals involved in similar looting incidents after August 5 of last year.
