The International Crimes Tribunal-1 has issued arrest warrants against former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Javed Patwary and four others in connection with a crimes against humanity case involving the killing of seven youths in Gazipur.
The three-member tribunal, led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mojumdar, passed the order on Monday (August 18) following a petition from the prosecution. The tribunal also set October 15 as the deadline for submitting the investigation report.
Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim told reporters that in 2016, seven madrasa students and youths with Islamic leanings were abducted from different places.
They were later confined in a locked house in Joydebpur, Gazipur, allegedly by law enforcement agencies. The victims were subsequently killed under the pretext of being militants.
Tamim added that the father of a 19-year-old madrasa student who was among the victims had filed a complaint with the investigation agency.
Preliminary findings revealed sufficient evidence against the accused, prompting the prosecution to seek arrest warrants.
While confirming the warrant, the prosecutor declined to disclose the names of the other accused, citing the interests of the ongoing investigation and security concerns.
