Appeal hearing ongoing against acquittal of Tarique Rahman, Babar

The hearing on the appeals filed by the state against the acquittal of BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman, sentenced to life imprisonment, and former state minister for home Lutfozzaman Babar, sentenced to death, along with other accused in the August 21 grenade attack case, is underway.

The proceedings began at 9:55 am on Tuesday (August 19) before a six-member appellate bench headed by Chief Justice Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed.

Deputy Attorney General Abdullah Al Mahmud Masud is representing the state, while lawyers SM Shahjahan and Mohammad Shishir Monir are set to argue on behalf of Tarique Rahman and Babar.

Senior BNP lawyers present in court include Zainul Abedin, Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon, Barrister Kaysar Kamal, Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajol, Advocate Gazi Kamrul Islam Sajal, Advocate Aminul Islam, Advocate Maksud Ullah, Advocate Zakir Hossain, and Advocate Anisur Rahman Raihan Bishwas.

Earlier, on July 31, the court concluded the second day of hearings in the appeal filed by the state challenging the acquittal of Tarique Rahman, Lutfozzaman Babar, and the other accused in the much-discussed grenade attack case.
