In a solemn and historic recognition, Abrar Fahad, who was a second-year student at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), has been honored with the 2025 Posthumous Independence Award.
This significant announcement came early on Monday, March 3, at 4:45 AM. Asif Mahmood Sajib Bhuiyan, Adviser to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives, shared the news on his Facebook page.
The post described Abrar Fahad as "A symbol of bravery against injustice, a representation of free thought."
It further stated, "Being awarded the posthumous Independence Award 2025 acknowledges his sacrifice. His values continue to guide us, inspiring us to pursue the path of justice. The nation will always remember you, Abrar!"
Abrar`s tragic death occurred on October 7, 2019, when he was brutally beaten to death by a group of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists at BUET.
The horrific incident sparked nationwide outrage and led to a lengthy legal battle.
On December 8, 2021, a court convicted 20 BUET students, sentencing them to death for their involvement in the murder of this young and promising student.
Through this posthumous recognition, Abrar Fahad`s spirit lives on, reminding the nation of the importance of justice, truth, and standing up against injustice.
His sacrifice will continue to inspire future generations.
