Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has stated that the complications related to sending workers to Malaysia are under thorough investigation, and actions will be taken against anyone found responsible.
On Wednesday, in response to a supplementary question from opposition Chief Whip Mujibul Haque in the National Parliament, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina made these remarks.
Mujibul Haque`s supplementary question highlighted the recent creation of syndicates and the subsequent halt in sending workers to Malaysia. He pointed out, “Malaysia accepts workers from 14 countries. Licensed agencies from 13 countries can send workers. However, in Bangladesh’s case, a few agencies, in collaboration with some individuals from both countries, control the process.”
He questioned, “Will any action be taken regarding the many workers who cannot go to Malaysia? Why can`t we send workers through all valid agencies in Bangladesh? Is the ministry or the diplomats responsible?”
In response, the Prime Minister mentioned that the government had launched special flights to send workers to Malaysia. She noted that despite these efforts, many were left behind, and an investigation is underway to determine the reasons for this exclusion.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said, “Whenever we decide on the number of workers to send, certain individuals involved in manpower businesses rush to send workers. They are connected with some people in Malaysia, causing complications. Each time the government reaches a solution, some people rush, creating an abnormal situation. Those who go often find their jobs and salaries uncertain, leading to difficulties. This doesn’t only happen in Malaysia but in many places.”
Discussing various government measures for sending workers abroad, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina emphasized, “Some people prefer to go abroad through brokers, leading to problems.”
The Prime Minister further advised, “I have repeatedly told the nation that there is no need to sell land or houses to spend millions of takas. If needed, you can take a loan from the Expatriate Welfare Bank. Loans are provided without collateral if necessary. It must be specified that the job is certain; then you can get a loan from the bank.”
Highlighting the safety of following proper procedures for going abroad, the Prime Minister said, “Still, some people in our country sell everything in a rush to go first and end up destitute. Or, if they do go, they face difficulties there.”
Regarding the issues in sending workers to Malaysia, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina concluded, “We are investigating the current problems, and if anyone is found responsible, appropriate action will be taken.”
