Election schedule likely in December, voting in early February: CEC

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A M M Nasir Uddin has said that the national election is expected to be held in the first half of February 2026, before the month of Ramadan.

He also noted that the formal election schedule will likely be announced one to two months in advance, once the commission receives an official letter from the Chief Adviser of the interim government.

Speaking at a press briefing at the Election Commission headquarters in Agargaon on Wednesday, the CEC expressed optimism about receiving the Chief Adviser’s letter soon.

“We believe the letter will come quickly, but even if it’s delayed, we are already preparing. There have been discussions for several days about the timing of the election, and despite the challenges of holding polls in February, our preparations are progressing,” he said.

Nasir Uddin emphasized the Election Commission’s commitment to ensuring a free, fair, and transparent election. “Our officials are working day and night, especially on finalizing the voter list,” he said.

He also pointed out that gaining public trust will be one of the commission’s major challenges, along with combating the misuse of artificial intelligence during the election process.

On Tuesday, in a televised address marking the anniversary of the July Uprising, Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus announced that the interim government would begin the process of handing over power to an elected government.

He also said a letter would be sent to the Election Commission, asking it to organize the next general election in February 2026, ahead of Ramadan.

The CEC echoed this timeline and reiterated the commission’s determination to ensure a peaceful and festive election atmosphere.

He added, “Law and order is improving, and we expect it to get even better in the coming months. We want to deliver an election as transparent as a mirror.”
