Dr. Asif Nazrul, Adviser on Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs, has called on protesting government officials and employees to refrain from obstructing official activities at the Secretariat in the name of demonstrations.
Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat on Monday, he urged the protesters to wait for the outcome of an upcoming meeting before continuing any further programs.
The adviser stated that a committee formed by the Ministry of Public Administration is holding a meeting today to discuss the demands related to the repeal of the Government Service Ordinance.
He emphasized that the committee’s decision will be presented at the next meeting of the Advisory Council. Until then, he requested that the demonstrators suspend their ongoing programs.
Dr. Asif Nazrul also mentioned that the interim government had pledged to address cases of enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings.
In line with that commitment, the government is in the process of forming a commission to investigate enforced disappearances.
He further added that a new law aimed at preventing enforced disappearances is expected to be enacted within the next month.
Following the ten-day Eid-ul-Azha holiday, government offices reopened on Sunday. On the second working day, the alliance of government officers and employees, known as the Government Officers and Employees Unity Council, resumed their movement.
Around 11:00 am, protesters gathered at the Secretariat’s Badam Tala area and marched toward the New Cabinet Building, where they have staged a sit-in demonstration.
The situation remains under close observation as discussions continue.
