Bangladesh and China have signed 13 memorandums of understanding (MoUs), including agreements on investment cooperation. The signing took place on Thursday at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People in the presence of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Chinese Premier Li Qiang.
Prior to the signing ceremony, bilateral talks were held between the two leaders.
The MoUs were signed by Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan, senior officials from the Multilateral Economic Affairs Division, and other officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In an evening press briefing, Chief Advisor’s Office spokesperson Mahdi Amin said the 13 MoUs cover a wide range of areas, including investment cooperation, with a focus on promoting green development and discussions on a joint action plan.
He said the two sides discussed increasing Bangladesh’s export capacity to China and expanding development cooperation. They also talked about concessional loans from China, including reducing interest rates and extending grace periods.
Mahdi Amin added that agreements were signed under China’s Global Development Initiative, focusing on health, education, and human resource capacity development.
He also mentioned a separate cooperation plan on human resource development, as well as an MoU on exporting Bangladesh’s national fruit, the jackfruit, to China.
On education and language cooperation, he said Bangladesh is set to introduce Mandarin language teaching in its school curriculum, alongside separate agreements on technical and vocational education cooperation.
Regarding media and research collaboration, he said multiple MoUs were signed to enhance cooperation between media organizations, think tanks, state television channels, and newspapers of the two countries.
On investment cooperation, he said discussions focused on increasing Chinese investment in Bangladesh, particularly in economic zones in Anwara and Mongla, aiming to establish Chinese factories and production facilities that could generate employment.
Earlier in the morning, an MoU was also signed in Beijing’s Diaoyutai State Guesthouse between the Communist Party of China and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
The agreement was signed in the presence of BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman by BNP Joint Secretary General (International Affairs) Humayun Kabir and Liu Haixing, Minister of the International Department of the Communist Party of China.
The agreement emphasizes strengthening communication and cooperation between the two parties, with expectations of future collaboration in media, think tanks, people-to-people exchanges, and improving livelihoods.
