Portugal winger Francisco Conceicao has dismissed suggestions that players feel obligated to pass to Cristiano Ronaldo, insisting the team remains focused on making the best decisions on the pitch.
The comments come after increased scrutiny of Ronaldo`s role following Portugal`s disappointing 1-1 draw against the Democratic Republic of Congo in their opening FIFA World Cup match.
Questions have been raised about whether the 41-year-old captain`s reduced mobility could affect Portugal`s attacking effectiveness, but Conceicao rejected the notion that the squad alters its game plan to accommodate the veteran forward.
Speaking ahead of Portugal`s crucial Group K clash against Uzbekistan, the Juventus winger said players simply look for the teammate in the best position regardless of status or reputation.
Conceicao also praised Ronaldo`s professionalism, describing him as an important figure within the squad whose experience, leadership and goal-scoring record continue to inspire younger players.
He noted that Ronaldo remains highly motivated despite his age and continues to contribute as a valuable member of the national team.
Portugal now face mounting pressure to secure a victory after dropping points in their opening match. Conceicao acknowledged the team`s performance fell below expectations and said the players were determined to respond positively.
The winger admitted criticism is inevitable when results do not go according to plan but stressed that the squad remains confident in its quality and ability to bounce back.
Portugal will take on Uzbekistan in Houston on Tuesday, knowing that a win could significantly boost their chances of progressing to the World Cup knockout stage.
Conceicao said the team is fully focused on delivering a stronger display and getting its campaign back on track after the frustrating start to the tournament.
