The Australia national football team secured their place in the World Cup knockout stage after a tense 0–0 draw with the Paraguay national football team in their final Group D match, advancing as runners-up on goal difference.
With the result in the expanded 48-team tournament, Australia booked a place in the round of 32, while Paraguay finished third in the group with four points and remain in contention as one of the best third-placed teams. Their qualification now depends on results from the remaining groups.
Both teams entered the match level on points after earlier beating Turkey, and knew that a win would guarantee direct progression alongside group winners the United States. Instead, the draw ensured Australia moved through, marking their third World Cup knockout appearance after 2006 and 2022.
The Australians will face the runners-up of Group G in Arlington, Texas, on July 3.
The first half saw Australia slightly on top, with Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill making several key saves to keep the score level. A late first-half effort from Cristian Volpato was also denied.
Paraguay improved after the break and enjoyed more possession, but neither side created clear chances in a tight second half. In stoppage time, a late effort from Jordan Bos narrowly missed the target, while Australia goalkeeper Patrick Beach comfortably dealt with a weak late shot.
Australia coach Tony Popovic made six changes to his starting lineup and handed a World Cup debut to 18-year-old defender Lucas Herrington, who became the youngest Australian to appear at a World Cup.
Paraguay’s Diego Gómez picked up a yellow card that will rule him out of their potential knockout match, should they advance.
