At least 589 people have died and around 3,000 others have been injured after two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela, said acting President Delcy Rodríguez. The information was reported on Friday by the BBC.

According to the report, the official death toll had previously been 235, with around 4,300 people reported injured.

Following the earthquakes, which struck on Wednesday evening (June 24, local time), many residents have been too afraid to return home due to fears of building collapses. As a result, large numbers of people have been spending the night in parks and open spaces.

Independent journalist María Emilia Miro Quesada said in an interview with Al Jazeera from Caracas that people are afraid to go back to their homes, as they remain uncertain about the structural safety and extent of damage to buildings.

She also noted that Venezuela’s fragile economic situation is adding to public anxiety about the future. However, she stressed that the immediate priority is securing resources and equipment for rescue operations.

Miro Quesada added that the most important task now is to ensure rapid, large-scale, and unhindered access to affected areas so that trapped and injured people can receive assistance.
