Public breathed a sigh of relief after AL’s activities banned: Shafiqul

Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary, Shafiqur Alam, stated that the public has welcomed the government‍‍`s decision to ban Awami League’s activities, citing the party‍‍`s past record of curbing citizens‍‍` rights.

He mentioned that the decision was made after consulting with all political parties involved in the July uprising, and it received nationwide support, which is why there were no protests.

Speaking at a “Meet the Press” event organized by the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU), Shafiqur clarified that the government expected some remorse from the Awami League following months of violence and deaths, but found none.

When asked about the government’s stance on Jamaat-e-Islami, he noted that actions had already been taken against them in 2012 and that the interim government‍‍`s current focus is on Awami League’s recent wrongdoings.

Regarding media freedom, he assured that no journalist or outlet would be silenced for criticizing the government but urged against spreading misinformation.

On the issue of YouTube channel bans in India affecting Bangladeshi TV stations, he called it “shameful” and said Bangladesh won’t retaliate to legitimize India‍‍`s actions.

Concerning the stock market, he emphasized reform but warned against replacing one corrupt group with another. He also mentioned the Chief Adviser supports bringing in foreign experts for a clean-up.

On Grameen organisations, he denied any government interference or personal gain for Dr Muhammad Yunus.

He also said a high-powered committee is investigating former President Abdul Hamid’s alleged misconduct and that the Sagar-Runi murder case is under active review by the PBI.
