A Dhaka court on Tuesday framed charges against three people, including Regent group Chairman Mohammad Shahed and Managing Director Masud Parvez, kicking off the trial in a fraud case.
The other accused in the case is Shipon Ali, general manager of Regent KCS Ltd.
Metropolitan Magistrate Devdas Chandra Adhikari indicted the trio after rejecting their plea for exemption from the case.
The court also fixed February 15 to start recording witness statements, said Public Prosecutor Azad Rahman.
According to case details, SM Shipon, a sand trader, had filed the case against the trio at Uttara west police station on the charge of fraudulence on July 24, 2020.
On November 8 that year, Inspector of police’s CID Akram Hossain submitted a charge sheet against the three.
According to the case, accused Ali ordered 50,00,000 CFT sand worth Tk19.75 crore from the plaintiff’s company. He issued three cheques of Pubali Bank in this regard that were dishonoured later.
Meanwhile, according to the order, Shipon delivered sand worth Tk61,00,000. Later, Ali informed that the sand was ordered by Shahed and Masud.
On February 14 the same year, Ali took the plaintiff to Shahed and Masud for money when the accused threatened the plaintiff.
On July 6, 2020, a unit of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) raided the Uttara and Mirpur branches of Regent Hospital. During the operation, fake Covid-19 test reports, and various irregularities, including a collection of money, from patients in the name of Covid-19 treatment were unveiled.
The next day, a case was filed against 17 people at Uttara west police station.
On July 15, from the border area of Satkhira, Shahed, also the Regent Hospital chairman, was arrested by RAB. Shahed has been in jail since then.
Last year, the court sentenced him to life imprisonment in an arms case.
