Rohingya leader shot dead in Ukhiya

A Rohingya community leader was shot to death by unidentified miscreants at Balukhali camp in Ukhiya upazila of Cox’s Bazar on Monday morning.

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Shafi Ullah, 38, leader of bloc-B of Balukhali No 8 Rohingya camp.

“The incident took place on Monday around 10:45am on the east side of Balukhali camp 8,” confirmed Sheikh Mohammad Ali, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ukhiya police station.

He said, “A group of miscreants fired several shots targeting Shafi when he was on his way back from a programme this morning, leaving him critically injured.”

Later, injured Shafi was taken to a hospital where on-duty doctor declared him dead, the OC said.

He said the body was sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar hospital morgue for autopsy.

It is still unclear who killed Shafi, he added.
