Imran Hossain, the chairman of Sadeeq Agro, was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police on Monday, March 3, around noon.
The arrest took place in the capital city, and this was confirmed by Mohammad Matiur Rahman Sheikh, the Additional Police Commissioner and head of the CID.
CID authorities have stated that Hossain is facing serious charges related to a money laundering case involving a large sum of 13.3 billion taka.
The arrest was made in connection with this case, and more details will be shared during a press conference scheduled for Tuesday, March 4.
The case also involves other individuals, including Touhidul Alam Zenith, and the company Sadeeq Agro itself.
According to the CID`s Financial Crime Unit, the company has been accused of smuggling, fraud, and forgery.
The charges claim that Sadeeq Agro violated government regulations by importing Brahma breed cows without proper approval.
The company is also said to have smuggled smaller cattle from Bhutan and Nepal into Bangladesh for sale.
Another aspect of the case involves accusations that Sadeeq Agro misrepresented local cows and goats as foreign or pedigree animals.
These animals were reportedly sold at inflated prices in sacrificial animal markets.
Imran Hossain is also accused of being involved in smuggling cows and buffaloes into Bangladesh through the borders of Teknaf and Ukhiya in Cox`s Bazar.
These animals were allegedly brought from Thailand and Myanmar and sold by Sadeeq Agro.
CID investigators have found that Imran Hossain transferred a significant amount of illegal earnings—amounting to 121 crore 32 lakh 15 thousand 144 taka—through various bank accounts under his name and those associated with his company.
The investigation continues as more details emerge about this widespread illegal activity.
