Tulip Siddiq, a prominent UK politician and the niece of Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, is facing growing scrutiny after news broke that she received a flat in London as a gift, with no payment made.
This revelation has raised questions as the investigation into the matter intensifies.
Siddiq, who serves as the UK’s Economic Secretary to the Treasury and City Minister, was reportedly given a two-bedroom apartment in the King`s Cross area of London in 2004.
The flat was gifted by a developer named Abdul Motaleb, who has connections to the former Awami League-led government in Bangladesh and is a close associate of Siddiq’s aunt, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The Financial Times, citing previously unreleased land registry files, reported this information on Friday.
According to the details, Motaleb, a well-known figure with ties to the Bangladeshi government, gave the flat to Siddiq without her having to make any financial contribution.
As a UK government minister, Tulip Siddiq is tasked with overseeing the country’s financial markets and tackling corruption.
However, after these allegations surfaced, she has come under increased pressure.
Bloomberg reached out for comments on the situation, but Siddiq has yet to respond publicly.
The growing investigation has sparked interest and concern as Siddiq`s role in the UK government could be affected by this ongoing probe.
