Protesters continued to occupy the Shahbagh intersection for a second straight day today, demanding the Awami League be banned from politics.
The blockade has effectively halted regular traffic through the area, although emergency vehicles, including ambulances, are being allowed to pass, reports our Dhaka University correspondent from the scene.
Participants in the protest include members of various political groups, student organisations, and individuals injured during the July uprising.
Organisers have declared that the blockade will remain in place until the interim government formally issues a notification banning the Awami League.
A mass gathering is scheduled for 3:00 PM today at Shahbagh, with parallel rallies planned at other key locations linked to the July uprising across the country.
In a verified Facebook post published around 4:00 AM today, Hasnat Abdullah, the southern regional chief organiser of the National Citizens` Party (NCP), urged supporters not to enforce blockades outside of Shahbagh.
“Refrain from blocking highways in Dhaka or other parts of the country. Instead, hold spontaneous gatherings and rallies at the district level, and remove any existing blockades,” his post read.
Protesters remained at Shahbagh throughout the night, continuing to chant slogans and display placards to press their demands.
