Shammo killing: Shahbagh police station besieged as 48-hour ultimatum ends

The protest follows the expiration of a previously announced 48-hour ultimatum given by the students.

Students have once again surrounded the Shahbagh Police Station in Dhaka, demanding justice for the murder of Dhaka University student and Chhatra Dal leader Shahriar Alam Shammo.

Around 12:30 PM on Sunday (May 18), a group of students marched from the Raju Memorial Sculpture on campus and staged a sit-in in front of the police station.

The protest follows the expiration of a previously announced 48-hour ultimatum given by the students.

In response, law enforcement officials have tightened security around the Shahbagh area.

The protesters are demanding the immediate arrest and prosecution of those involved in Shammo’s murder.

Earlier that morning, students gathered at the TSC (Teacher-Student Centre) area for a protest rally, chanting slogans such as "Why did my brother die? We want answers!" and "Our brother is in the grave, why are the killers still free?" The entire area echoed with their chants.

Previously, on the night of Tuesday, May 13, Shahriar Alam Shammo was fatally stabbed near the open stage at Suhrawardy Udyan by unidentified assailants.

He was a student of the Institute of Education and Research, enrolled in the 2018–19 academic session, and served as the literature and publication secretary of the Chhatra Dal unit at Sir AF Rahman Hall.
