Shammo murder: 3 arrestees landed in jail

Three individuals arrested in connection with the murder of Dhaka University student and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leader Shahriar Alam Shammo have been sent to jail as police have not yet filed a remand petition.

On Wednesday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jamsed Alam ordered their incarceration following a request from Shahbagh police, who presented the suspects in court.

The detainees—Tamim Hawladar (30), Palash Sardar (30), and Samrat Mallick (28)—are all residents of Madaripur. They were apprehended from Rajabazar and other areas of the capital on Tuesday night.

Three arrestees Tamim, Palash and Samrat were landed in jail.

Although Sub-Inspector Toufiq Hasan, the case’s investigating officer, had earlier indicated plans to seek a 10-day remand, no such petition had been submitted at the time of their court appearance.

The incident occurred around 11:30pm on Tuesday when Shammo, a student of the Institute of Education and Research (2018–19 session), became involved in an altercation following a motorbike collision near Suhrawardy Udyan. During the scuffle, he was stabbed and critically injured.

He was immediately taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival.

Shammo, 25, hailed from Ullapara in Sirajganj and served as the literary and publications secretary of the Chhatra Dal unit at Sir AF Rahman Hall.
