Nearly 10 months after a shop employee was shot dead during the July uprising in Dhaka’s Badda area, a court has accepted a case against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 311 others and ordered an investigation.
On Thursday, following the plaintiff’s statement, the Metropolitan Magistrate directed Badda Police to record the complaint as a formal case.
The complaint was filed by the victim Parvez Bepari’s father, alleging that on July 19, a crowd of 500–700 protesters was attacked near Subastu Tower during a demonstration.
Parvez, an employee of A Plus N Furniture, was shot and later died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Among the accused are former ministers, ruling party leaders, a former police intelligence chief, and several others, including a student leader and a film actor.
The charges include murder and attempted murder related to state-led repression during the mass movement.
It is also alleged that on August 5, Sheikh Hasina fled the country amid growing unrest. Separate legal proceedings are underway in the international crimes tribunal against several former officials, including a former police chief, over alleged crimes against humanity committed during the suppression of the uprising.
