Sixth day of EC hearings on candidacy underway

The Election Commission (EC) today began the sixth day of hearings on appeals related to candidacy for the 13th Jatiya Sangsad election.

The hearings against the decisions of returning officers over acceptance and rejection of nomination papers started at 10:00am this morning at the auditorium of the Election Building in the city’s Agargaon area.

According to the EC-announced schedule, appeals bearing serial numbers 381 to 480 are being heard today. 

The full commission, chaired by Chief Election Commissioner A M M Nasir Uddin, will conduct the hearings until 5:00pm today with a one-hour recess in the afternoon.

On the fifth day of hearings yesterday, a total of 100 appeals were taken up, of which 73 were allowed, 17 were rejected and 10 were kept pending.

EC Secretariat Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said that hearings on a total of 380 appeals have been completed over the past five days from Saturday to Wednesday. 

Of these, 277 appeals were allowed, while 81 were rejected and 23 remained pending for various reasons.

As per the commission’s schedule, hearings on appeals numbered 481 to 510 along with the pending ones will be held tomorrow, from 3:00pm to 5:00pm after Jumma prayers. 

On January 17, appeals numbered 511 to 610 will be heard, while on the final day on January 18, appeals numbered 611 to 645 along with the remaining pending appeals will be disposed of, concluding the process.

A total of 645 appeals were filed with the Election Commission challenging the decisions on acceptance and rejection of nomination papers in this election. 

On the last day of scrutiny on January 4, returning officers and assistant returning officers declared 1,842 nomination papers valid and rejected the candidatures of 723 out of 2,568 nomination papers submitted in 300 parliamentary constituencies for the national election.
