The high court has stayed the by-election of Sylhet -3 constituency till August 5. The polls were scheduled to be held on Wednesday (July 28).
A single virtual bench of justice M Enayetur Rahim passed the order on Monday (July 26).
Earlier in the morning, Advocate Mohammed Shishir Monir filed a writ petition on behalf of 7 residents of the constituency and 6 Supreme Court lawyers seeking a stay order on the election due to coronavirus concern.
Besides, a legal notice was issued to the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) on Sunday to suspend voting in the polls.
The Sylhet-3 seat fell vacant after MP Mahmud Us Samad Chowdhury died of coronavirus on March 11.
